This page explains what information Trusted Trail Maps collects when you use this app, particularly location data, and how it's handled.
Location data
We collect precise location (GPS) in two places:
"You are here" map dot / Trails Near Me. Used to show your position on the map or find nearby trails. This location is used entirely on your own device — it is never sent to or stored on our servers.
Trail condition reports. If you report a trail condition and attach a photo, your browser asks permission to capture your location at that moment, and it's saved with the report and photo. If you submit a report without a photo, no location is captured for that report at all — attaching a photo is optional.
Why we collect it
Location submitted with a trail condition report helps our trail crew find the exact spot on a trail where an issue was observed (a washout, a hazard, a closure), rather than relying on a written description alone.
Who can see it
Trail condition reports — including any attached location and photos — are visible only to Trusted Trail Maps administrators reviewing submissions. They are never shown to other app users or published anywhere public.
How long we keep it
Trail condition reports (including any location data and photos) are automatically deleted after 12 months. You can request earlier deletion of a specific report at any time — see contact info below.
Other data we collect
App usage analytics (trail views, searches, map opens) — never includes GPS coordinates or precise location; these fields are explicitly excluded before anything is stored.
Client portal accounts (for our organization partners) — name, email, and organization info, used only to manage that partner's trail content.
Install attribution. When you scan a QR code or tap a link to install the app, we briefly log your IP address, browser user agent, and timezone. This lets us connect your app install back to the trail or organization you came from, so the app opens with the right branding and content on first launch. This data is not used for advertising and is not shared with third parties, and it is automatically deleted after a short retention window.
We do not sell your data, and we do not use location data for advertising.
